The Video - Week 8, 07/03/22 - 14/03/22
This week my role was researcher. This involved thinking of ideas for the video content and editing. I started by writing a research document to send to the group.
In my research document, I talked about the importance of engaging the audience. Often a viewer’s interest is decided within the first five-ten seconds of view-time. For this reason, it is important to catch the attention of the viewer as soon as possible, and to keep it.
I also put forward some ideas for editing, such as:
· Music - If there will be any, and to make sure the tone of the music matches with the topic.
· Length – shorter and more concise would be ideal to maintain attention of viewers.
· Voice over – Should be clear, easily understandable, natural and unstilted. Good audio quality is a must.
· To make sure our goal is front and centre – the focus needed to be tight for such a short video (and to Link the Success for All campaign at the end)
· Visuals - bold colours and large, easily legible text might catch the eye of a viewer.
· How it might also be an idea to use the same colours as the rest of our online campaign (light blue and white etc). A consistent colour palette could help keep our campaign memorable, and easily recognisable. A link to my research document can be found below.
Our aim for the video was to raise awareness for the ‘Success for All’ fund, and the issues surrounding access to online learning for lower-income students. During a time of increasing digital developments, students are expected to have these devices in their university degrees despite the expensive costs. We also provided information on how the ‘Success for All’ Fund can increase opportunities for those from a lower socio-economic background.
The format of the video was an explainer, outlining why the Success for All fund is important, and why the digital divide is an ever-growing issue in Exeter University and the world.
The video's audience was students who may be deterred from going to Russel Group universities like Exeter by cost of technology. Also, Exeter University students, especially those who come from lower-income families and may benefit from the Success for All scheme.
And so, on Wednesday, our group borrowed a video camera and tripod from the Exeter University Drama department and went to campus to record some footage. This would be used in the background of our video. Then, the editing process was started. Soon, we had a one minute explainer video ready to post on our Instagram. A link can be found below.
I think this week was again a positive one, with all our deadlines being met and group members completing their roles. Our video was seen by seventy-two unique viewers on our Instagram, which is clearly a sign of success, and that our page is reaching a wider audience at the University of Exeter.
